Harris Afterschool Program Tunes Up Future Violinist

After the bell rings at our partner school Harris Early College Prep Elementary, some 22 Bulldog students have a chance to tune up their musical skills on the violin.

Harris teacher Mary Dollar initially began teaching violin to a group of refugee students during school hours. Eventually the group started meeting after school, and with the help of a GoFundMe campaign, supporters purchased instruments for students to use in the class.  Soon after,  Harris received an afterschool grant, and the violin class was included in the campus afterschool lineup. The class grew from approximately 10 students to now double in size and continues to enjoy widespread interest among the schools 3rd to 5th graders.

Students are allowed and encouraged to take their assigned violin home to practice, and it appears to have paid off. The violin group has played at several community events and is always a big hit!
